What is International Health Insurance?

International, or expat health insurance, are health insurance plans geared toward foreigners who just relocated from other parts of the world to work and live in Singapore with a valid visa. They provide hospitalisation and surgery covers in the event of an illness, injury, or disability.

Unlike Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents, Foreigners under working visas do not have MediSave or MediShield Life. Therefore, their integrated shield plans, also known as IP, are entirely covered by private insurers.

Health insurance for expats covers the same thing as an IP for locals would. These benefits include:

  • Hospitalisation - Hospitalisation ward, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), surgical, medication, diagnostics, and other miscellaneous fees,
  • Outpatient Treatment – Kidney dialysis, erythropoietin, cancer radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and stereotactic radiotherapy,
  • Overseas Medical Coverages for emergency and evacuation.
  • Pre-hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation claims.

Only three insurance companies are currently offering Integrated Shield health insurance plans for expats and foreigners: NTUC IncomeShield, AIA, and Great Eastern.

Health insurance in Singapore is subjected to deductibles and co-insurance. Deductibles are the flat rate of how much you have to pay for your medical bills before any insurer can pay any benefit payment under the IP policy to ensure that the premiums of the hospitalisation plan remain affordable. Co-Insurance is a specified percentage of the total medical expenses post-deductible payment that you must pay according to your IP Policy states.
