Highlights of FWD's International Health Insurance

FWD's international health insurance will benefit those who are looking for customisable and affordable hospitalisation coverage. There are a total of 6 plans to choose from, which are named after their annual limits for hospitalisation benefit (100k, 250k, 500k, 1m, 2m and 3m). You can also choose your plan based on your desired region (ASEAN, Asia, Worldwide and Worldwide Excluding US), annual coverage limit and type of hospital room. FWD's premiums are generally low, costing 70-75% below average for international health plans regardless of whether you are looking for looking for local or international coverage (excluding the US). These plans are available for expats in Singapore or Singaporeans considering going abroad. You can also purchase these plans for your spouse and children.

This graph shows the cheapest international health insurance plans for expats living in Singapore and Singaporeans who need international coverage

Cost-conscious healthy individuals will benefit from any of FWD's plans. First, FWD provides full coverage for hospitalisation charges, cancer treatments, accidental dental and organ transplants, regardless of the plan you choose. Secondly, healthy individuals may appreciate the no claims bonus that will double their annual limit if they don't make a claim for 2 years. However, consumers looking for a wide scope of coverage may be disappointed in the 100k to 500k plans, since these plans only provide 2 of the 6 miscellaneous hospitalisation benefits offered to higher-end plans. However, if cost takes priority over benefits, these smaller limit plans can provide sufficient enough coverage for a cost that is at least 60% lower than similar plans from other companies.

Instead, those who are looking to maximise value may benefit more with FWD's 1m to 3m plans, as they provide the most coverage per dollar of premium compared to any other plans on the market. You will also get a range of miscellaneous inpatient benefits including psychiatric treatment, a hospital cash benefit, HIV/AIDS treatment and kidney dialysis. The 1m plan for the ASEAN region costs between S$628 and S$2,851 depending on your age, and the 1m worldwide (excluding US) plan costs between S$703 and S$3,001—resulting in premiums 66-71% below the industry average. However, you should expect to pay double the prices of worldwide coverage if you need the US included.

FWD Optional Benefit Packages

FWD offers 3 optional benefit packages: Outpatient Benefits, Dental & Vision Benefits and Maternity Benefits. Maternity and Dental/Vision packages are only purchasable once you opt for the Outpatient Benefits, making the total cost of your plan increase to a few thousand dollars. The Outpatient Benefits package is available only to those buying the 500k plan or higher and its premiums vary greatly, increasing from around S$1,200 for a 25-year old to S$5,257 for a 65 year old. Its coverage includes psychiatric care, physiotherapy and routine health checks and vaccinations. Because FWD's base plans are priced so low compared to their competitors, the Outpatient Benefits package may be worth adding, as you'll still end up with a plan that costs 30% less than its comparable peers. However, you should note there is a 10-20% coinsurance option.

The Dental & Vision and Maternity Benefits packages are only available for the 1m to 3m plans in addition to only being available if you opt for the Outpatient Benefits package. The Dental & Vision benefits package is the cheapest package, starting with a cost just under S$600 for a 25-year old and around S$780 for a 65-year old. You will receive basic and routine dental work coverage and frame lenses and eye check coverage every two years. While the package itself is relatively affordable, the fact that you can only add it when only you add Outpatient Benefits could dissuade cost-conscious consumers who were originally enticed by FWD's low base plan premiums.

The Maternity Benefit package is the most expensive of the three packages. Costing between S$4,000 and S$5,300 for women aged 25 to 45, this package can bring your total premium into the 5 figure range. Its benefits consist of newborn hospitalisation and daycare treatment coverage and pre-natal, post-natal and delivery coverage. However, due to the high prices, we would not recommend this option for budget conscious women who need maternity coverage. Instead, we'd recommend insurers like MSIG who will provide the same benefits for around 30% less.
