Great Eastern Maternity Insurance: What Makes it Unique?

Great Eastern's standalone maternity plan offers comprehensive coverage for the mother and her newborn

Great Eastern's Flexi Maternity plan is a standalone maternity plan that aims to financially protect the pregnant mother and her newborn for 3 years. What makes it stand out is the fact that you are not obligated to purchase another insurance policy—unlike mostcomp maternity insurance plans. However, while this feature can make the plan a suitable option for some people, Flexi Maternity's restrictions surrounding certain pregnancy situations may make it less suitable for others.

Great Eastern Flexi Maternity Highlights & Benefits

Great Eastern's Flexi Maternity plan is a standalone maternity insurance policy. It provides financial protection against the mother's total and permanent disability or death, the newborn's death, pregnancy complications and congenital illnesses. There are two options to choose from: the Essential plan, with a sum assured of S$5,000 or the Enhanced plan with a sum assured of S$10,000. Premiums are paid once and customers will receive 3 years of coverage: From policy inception to 30 days after the child is born for mothers and from birth to the third policy year for newborns. Unlike most maternity insurance policies, it does not come tied to a life insurance policy. However, individuals do have the option to easily sign up to a life insurance policy within 90 days of their child's birth with no medical underwriting. Customers will even receive a S$108 voucher to offset the initial premium of any eligible plan.

Great Eastern also offers a daily hospitalisation care benefit of S$100 or S$200 for a maximum of 30 days. This benefit will be paid out if you are hospitalised for any of the covered pregnancy complications. It will also be paid out if your child gets admitted to the ICU or HDU due to any of the covered congenital illnesses or 6 other conditions including pneumonia, bronchitis or hand, foot and mouth disease. Lastly, you will receive Zika coverage for you and your newborn, a rare feature for maternity plans.

While Great Eastern can be suitable for mothers who don't want to be forced into buying life insurance, it does have features that may be drawbacks for certain consumers. For instance, you are not eligible for the plan if you are expecting triplets or more. Furthermore, you won't be covered if you became pregnant as a result of In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). Another potential drawback is that unlike other maternity plans that cover 10 pregnancy complications and 23 congenital illnesses, the Flexi Maternity plan only covers 8 complications and 18 congenital illnesses. Thus, it is important to read the covered conditions thoroughly to see whether all of your concerns are addressed.

Policy Eligibility & Exclusions

Women who are between the ages of 18 and 45 and who are currently in their 13th to 40th week of pregnancy are eligible to purchase Flexi Maternity.

One drawback of Great Eastern's Flexi Maternity plan is that it does not cover more than 2 newborns in a single pregnancy. It also doesn't cover women who became pregnant via IVF. For a full list of exclusions you should read the policy documents that come with your plan.
