Comparison of Competitive Travel Cards in Singapore by Dollar Value

Based on an average monthly spend of S$2,000, we analysed some of the most competitive travel cards on the market to estimate returned value-to-consumer after 2 years, accounting for rebates and netting out annual fees. As a note, dollar value is heavily dependent on spending habits; intangible benefits (like free travel insurance and airport lounge access) are valuable but difficult to quantify.

While both KrisFlyer UOB Card and American Express Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Card clearly target frequent SIA flyers, they're actually best fit for different types of consumers. The first is uniquely tailored to millennials who spend time abroad–and who don't mind waiting to earn miles bonuses–while the latter caters to beginners who want a basic, hassle-free "starter" option. Which seems to better match your needs and lifestyle? We've created a detailed breakdown comparing the two cards below to help you with your decision.

Rewards Rates: KrisFlyer UOB vs. Amex SIA KrisFlyer

At first, it may seem like KrisFlyer UOB and Amex SIA KF Card have a similar rewards structure: a flat miles rate for local and overseas spend with a boost for SIA brand transactions. However, the nature of this boost–as well as a few extras–quickly differentiate these two options. KrisFlyer UOB Card's flat rate is slightly higher than Amex SIA KF's, at 1.2 miles/S$1 compared to 1.1 miles/S$1. Additionally, cardholders earn 3 miles/S$1 with SIA compared to 2 miles for brand transactions with Amex SIA KF. However, KrisFlyer UOB Card really pulls ahead by offering a boosted 3 miles per S$1 on global dining, transport, online fashion & travel bookings with just S$500 annual SIA spend. These spend categories align well with a social young adult, and this minimum is quite reasonable even for those on a limited budget. Amex SIA KF Card may be better for beginners who aren't ready to track minimums or spend categories.

Please note: KrisFlyer UOB's boosted rewards rates are unlocked with S$500 annual SIA spend. Bonus miles are rewarded at the end of the year. Amex SIA KF Card's overseas rate applies only in June & December (off-season earns 1.1 mi/S$1)

Amex SIA KF Card is also a bit more limiting in its rewards. While cardholders can sometimes earn higher rates on general overseas spend, this eligible period is limited to just June & December; consumers earn 1.1 miles/S$1 overseas all other times of the year. Also, while KF UOB Card allows consumers to earn at boosted rates for online bookings with any merchant, Amex SIA KF Card only rewards spend with SIA brands. Cardholders do earn an elevated 3.1 miles/S$1 on Grab rides, but this is capped at just 620 miles/month (equal to about S$6.2 in redemption value).

KrisFlyer UOB and Amex SIA KF Card are similar, however, in that both reward consumers in KrisFlyer miles rather than points. Therefore, consumers don't need to worry about conversion fees or extended processing times. KrisFlyer miles do expire 3 years after they're credited to the consumer's frequent flyer account, however. Alternative travel cards' rewards points never expire, eliminating the need to track benefits.

Travel Perks: KrisFlyer UOB vs. Amex SIA KrisFlyer

KrisFlyer UOB Card and Amex SIA KrisFlyerCard are also quite different in terms of perks. KrisFlyer UOB Card appeals to the budget-friendly traveller. Cardholders receive special privileges with SIA's low-cost carrier, Scoot, including free standard seat selection, booking flexibility waivers, baggage allowance upgrades and complimentary priority check-in & boarding. Other perks include a S$20 cash rebate with a S$100+ nett transaction at KrisShop, S$15 worth of Grab codes for rides to and from Changi airport, and another S$15 voucher good towards ChangiWiFi. Cardholders also receive free travel insurance (limited to the cardmember only).

Amex SIA KF Card offers fewer travel perks overall. Cardholders who spend S$12k within a year receive a S$150 cash credit with SIA, further incentivising airline loyalty. Other perks include Hertz Gold Plus car rental privileges, discounts on portable WiFi routers at Changi, and access to dining & lifestyle savings via American Express Selects.

It's important to point out that neither KrisFlyer UOB nor Amex SIA KF Card offer lounge access. Those who prioritise luxury perks might be better off with another option (consider the alternatives reviewed below). KrisFlyer UOB Card does offer consumers who spend S$5k with SIA annually expedited KrisFlyer Elite Silver status. However, higher spenders who can unlock this perk might prefer a more expensive travel card with additional benefits.

Fees & Requirements: KrisFlyer UOB vs. Amex SIA KrisFlyer

Another big differentiator between KrisFlyer UOB and Amex SIA KF Card is bonus structure. Amex SIA KF Card often offers new cardmembers attractive welcome bonuses, often up to 20k+ miles (though this amount changes according to the running promotion). These bonuses add on to standing perks such as 5,000 KF miles with the first card transaction, another 500 miles with the first Grab ride and S$150 SIA credit with S$12k spend. Generally, Amex SIA KF Card is a great option for people planning an upcoming trip–perhaps a honeymoon–because of its easily accessible upfront bonuses.

While Amex SIA KF Card provides upfront miles, KrisFlyer UOB delays rewards significantly. Because its boosted 3 miles/S$1 rate is contingent on S$500 annual spend, cardholders must wait until the end of the year to receive their rewards boost. As a result, the amount of miles credited to a cardholder's account during the year itself will likely be quite low (given the 1.2 miles/S$1 general rate). People who don't mind waiting for their rewards can likely earn more miles for their spend in the long run, but those planning for an upcoming vacation may still prefer Amex SIA KF Card.

Comparison to Similar Travel Credit Cards

Both KrisFlyer UOB and Amex SIA KF Card heavily reward SIA loyalists. However, several cards on the market provide competitive rates regardless of which airline a cardholder flies with.
