Prudential PRUShield Highlights
Prudential PRUShield is a great Integrated Shield Plan (IP) option for the average Singaporean who has no serious health conditions but still wants to enjoy higher ward coverage. It has three plans: the Standard plan for B1 ward coverage, the Plus plan for Class A ward coverage and the Premier plan for private hospital coverage. Prudential also offers an electronic Letter of Guarantee of up to S$10,000 to make your hospital admission process easier and to prevent high upfront costs. Furthermore, you can purchase this plan online and there's no need for medical underwriting for new plan purchases during significant life events such as marriage or childbirth.
Prudential's non-Standard plans offer generous coverage with above average annual limits and pre and post-hospitalisation coverage. They fully cover hospitalisation, surgery and provide a variety of miscellaneous benefits. Prudential also offers 3 riders for its Premier plan, making it a good option for consumers looking for customisable private hospital health insurance plans.
While wealthy, young individuals will find high value in Prudential's non-Standard plans, two other types of consumers find better value elsewhere. This is especially considering Prudential's claim-based pricing approach, which heavily favours healthy individuals who aren't likely to experience hospitalisations. Furthermore, older consumers could face premiums that are 30% above the market average with Prudential's private hospital coverage. Lastly, budget minded consumers could find cheaper Standard plans for B1 wards from other insurers.
Fully Covered Hospitalisation & Surgery Treatments:
- Daily Room and Board
- Miscellaneous Hospital Services
- Daily ICU
- Confinement in Community Hospital
- Surgical Procedures
- Stem Cell Transplant
- Gamma Knife/Novalis Radiosurgery
- Emergency medical treatment abroad (check with insurer)
Prudential PRUShield Standard Plan
Those who are looking for a budget Standard plan may not find Prudential to be their best option. Because Standard plans provide identical coverage across all IP insurers, their main differentiating factor is price and Prudential's pricing is lackluster. While premiums for 25 and 35-year olds are just under the average at S$49 and S$65 (before Medisave contributions), premiums for older individuals are average to slightly above average. Thus, older individuals who are looking for a budget-friendly B1 ward plans may fare better with other insurers such as Great Eastern.
|Premiums & Coverage||PRUShield Standard||Standard Avg.|
|Value (Limit/S$ Premium)||1,460||1,494|
|Daily Ward (Non-ICU)||S$1,700/day||S$1,700/day|
Prudential PRUShield Plus Plan
The PRUShield Plus plan is a great budget-friendly A ward plan with premiums that are 26-37% below average regardless of age. Not only that, its annual limit is around the ward A plan median at S$600,000 and includes full coverage for hospitalisation, surgery, cancer, renal failure, pregnancy complications, congenital abnormalities and accidental dental, along with S$3,500 of inpatient psychiatric coverage and a S$3,000 final expense benefit. The pro-ration for staying in private hospitals is also around the market average for A ward plans at 65% (meaning only 65% of your hospital bill will be covered).
While the Plus plan is a great option for those looking for affordable ward A plans, it may not benefit those who would prefer to maximise coverage, as there are A plans available with higher limit ward and better psychiatric and final expense benefits.

Prudential PRUShield Premier Plan
Prudential's PRUShield Premier plan can be a good option for wealthy individuals looking for a high value private hospital plan. Its premiums start off below market average for 25-year olds at S$209 but increase to 21% above average for 75-year olds. In terms of coverage, the Premier plan has an annual limit of S$1.2 million—the second highest limit out of all the IP plans available along with S$4,000 of inpatient psychiatric benefits, S$60,000 organ transplant benefits and a S$5,000 final expense provision. Hospitalisation, cancer, surgery, outpatient renal failure, pregnancy complications and accidental dental treatment are all fully covered as well. Due to its increasingly expensive premiums, we would not recommend this plan to budget-restricted seniors. However, wealthy individuals from age 25 to 35 may find some benefit with the above average benefits offered at fairly decent prices.
