Sompo TravelJoy: What You Need to Know
Sompo's three travel insurance plans can be characterised as providing middle of the market, balanced protection in most, if not all coverage areas and below-average prices. On the one hand, these plans' relatively seamless coverage means that you won't have to worry about your plan not being there for you when you need it, no matter what kind of circumstance arises. On the other hand, in failing to stand out in any significant way from other plans on the market, Sompo's plans lack that "X factor" that could help make them a clear top choice. Of the three, Sompo's premium-tier policy, the Elite Plan, settles most comfortably into a definitive niche, providing coverage that meets the industry standard at a bargain price. The budget-tier Vital Plan and mid-tier Deluxe Plan, however, tend to be outperformed by other plans on the market that provide better coverage for the same price or similar coverage for a lower price.
There are some unique benefits that Sompo offers that can benefit families looking to maximise medical and accident coverage. This includes quarantine allowance for normally excluded diseases such as SARS, tuberculosis, H1N1, mumps, rubella and rabies. Additionally, there is a war and terrorism cover, coverage for reconstructive surgery due to burns and recuperation allowance due to accidental miscarriage. This makes Sompo a good choice for families who are expecting or who have young children/elderly relatives who are prone to getting sick. However, you will get the most of these benefits only if you purchase the Elite or Deluxe plans, so if you are in the market for a medically comprehensive budget plan, you may have better luck with other insurers.
Along with a handful of other insurers, Sompo will cover you for war if you are an innocent bystander, accidental miscarriage and certain infectious diseases. Otherwise, the rest of the exclusions are quite standard. You are not covered for manual or hazardous work, pre-existing conditions, trips taken for a specific medical purpose and loss or damage done to items caused by detention or confiscation by official employees.
|Medical Exclusions||Trip Inconvenience Exclusions|
|Medical Expenses for pre-existing conditions||Engaging in sport for compensation|
|Pregnancy-related events unless accidental miscarriage||Items taken by customs officials|
|Suicide and mental illness||Baggage sent separately or items left unattended|
|Cosmetic or elective surgery (unless necessitated by injury)||Fragile articles|
|Travelling when you are medically unfit||Inability to travel due to business or contractual obligations|
|Travelling for medical purposes||Hunting, skydiving, paragliding, potholing, rock climbing|
Sompo Vital Plan
Sompo's cheapest plan, the Vital Plan, is an affordable plan that fails to stand out noticeably from other alternatives on the market. Frequent fliers should note that you cannot buy annual/multi-trip policies with this plan. In terms of price, the Vital Plan is priced most similarly to Allianz Global Assistance's Bronze Plan, for most types of trips costing within about S$2 of Allianz Global Assistance's budget plan. However, in our judgment, the Allianz Global Assistance Bronze Plan has Sompo Vital beat when it comes to value for your money. This is because Allianz Global Assistance's Bronze Plan has better protection for the sorts of disruptions or accidents that are more likely to occur (such as trip cancellations and delays and baggage issues), and therefore, you'll have better protection.
While the Vital Plan is less expensive than most plans, better prices can be found with other insurers without having to compromise on coverage. Etiqa's Basic Plan features coverage that is highly similar to Sompo Vital despite tending to be cheaper, with Sompo's Vital Plan offering better coverage for trip and baggage delays. However, it is worth repeating that if you're willing to pay a little more for better coverage in these two areas, Allianz Global Assistance Bronze gives you even greater protection for the same amount of money. FWD Vital, which offers higher coverage in personal accident/death, emergency medical/evacuation/repatriation and trip cancellations than Sompo Vital, is another high-value pick that also tends to be cheaper than Sompo Vital.
|Vital Plan Price||Basic Plan Average|
|1-Week ASEAN Value Ratio||0.75||0.62|
|1-Week Asia Value Ratio||0.72||0.67|
|1-Week Global Value Ratio||0.69||0.65|
|Total Medical & Personal Accident||S$300,000||S$416,923|
|Trip Inconvenience (Baggage delay, cancellations, postponement)||S$10,000||S$10,904|
Sompo Deluxe Plan
Compared to other second-tier travel insurance plans, Sompo's Deluxe Plan offers a medium, balanced level of coverage in most areas at prices that are below the industry average. Nevertheless, like the Sompo Vital Plan, the Deluxe Plan is outshone by other policies within the tier that provide you with roughly the same degree of protection at a lower price. Specifically, Budget Direct's Comprehensive Plan bears more than a passing resemblance to Sompo's Deluxe Plan while also maintaining the edge as the cheapest mid-tier plan on the market for most, if not all, kinds of trips. Although Sompo Deluxe offers S$50,000 more coverage for medical expenses, Budget Direct Comprehensive offers similar coverage for baggage, personal accident/death and trip delays, as well as S$4,000 more coverage for trip cancellations than Sompo Deluxe.
For travellers seeking higher coverage from their travel insurance plan, you can still do better than the average Sompo Deluxe Plan. We would also highlight Aviva Travel Plus and Allianz Global Assistance Silver as policies that give you particularly good value for your money and offer superior coverage within the middle tier of travel insurance plans.
|Deluxe Plan||Mid-Tier Industry Average|
|1-Week ASEAN Value Ratio||0.87||0.88|
|1-Week Asia Value Ratio||1.81||0.89|
|1-Week Global Value Ratio||0.79||0.91|
|Total Medical/Personal Accident||S$550,000||S$874,688|
|Trip Inconvenience (Baggage delay, cancellations, postponement)||S$13,000||S$17,719|
Sompo Elite Plan
Sompo's Elite Plan is a high-value choice for individuals seeking a solid premium plan at a bargain price. It provides considerable bang for your buck, featuring an attractive combination of medium coverage with no especial weak points and among the lowest prices within the luxury tier of travel insurance policies for many kinds of trips (especially within ASEAN). Sompo's Elite Plan also throws in S$1,000 of coverage for golf equipment, as well as a reward for getting a hole in one and an unused green fee cover, adding some luxury flavor to its functional, if not quite glamorous, featureset.
While Sompo's Elite Plan does tend to be extremely affordable for a premium travel insurance plan, its annual policies run around the middle of the pack in terms of cost. Thus, for frequent fliers seeking a bargain on a multi-trip policy, we might point you toward DirectAsia's Travel 500 Plan instead. It should also be noted that travellers seeking the best coverage money can buy may be better suited by the more expensive, yet more comprehensive luxury plans sold by Aviva (Travel Prestige) and Allianz Global Assistance(Gold).

Sompo offers medical coverage for leisure underwater activities (scuba diving) for their Elite and Deluxe plans, as well as Golf cover for their Elite plan. If you opt for the Deluxe plan, you will only get coverage for your golf equipment. You will not be covered for trekking unless you are going to Mount Kinabalu, Mount Ophir or Taman Negara.
