Pros

  • People with S$250-350/month dining & overseas budget
  • Supplementary card for lower spend areas

Cons

  • People seeking to maximise rewards for everyday spend
  • Those with cards that already reward dining & overseas
  • People who spend S$350+/month on dining alone

Standard Chartered Rewards+ Card is a great supplementary card for consumers with a specialised primary card–such as a shopping card–who would like to maximise rewards for dining and overseas expenses, beyond the base rate provided by the primary card. For example, most shopper cards only reward dining and general overseas spend with 0.4 miles per S$1. If consumers charge these expenses to SC Rewards+ Card instead, they can earn the equivalent of 1.45 miles per S$1 on dining and 2.9 miles per S$1 on foreign exchange spend.

While there is no minimum spend requirement, earnings with SC Rewards+ Card are maxed out after just S$333 dining or S$167 overseas. Therefore, this card is best as a supplementary card for consumers who spend S$250-S$350 on dining monthly & sometimes travel overseas.

What Makes Standard Chartered Rewards+ Card Stand Out

For consumers with a specialised primary card that offers base rate earnings for dining expenses, Standard Chartered Rewards+ Card offers an opportunity to maximise rewards for dining, locally and overseas, by serving as a supplementary card. For example, this card may be a great fit for individuals with shopper cards (like Citi Rewards Card) that offer only 0.4 miles per S$1 dining and general overseas spend, or cards with cashback specialised outside of dining (like CIMB Visa Signature Card). With SC Rewards+ Card, consumers earn the equivalent of 1.45 miles (5 Pts) per S$1 dining spend, and 2.9 miles (10 Pts) on overseas spend–higher than consumers would earn with such primary cards.

Please note that SC Rewards+ Card’s dining rate is capped at an average of 1,667 miles/month, with all further spend earning at base rate

While SC Rewards+ Card makes for a great supplementary card because there is no minimum spend requirement and the S$192.6 fee is waived for 2 years, it’s only competitive when used for monthly dining budgets between S$250-S$350, local and overseas. Earnings on dining and overseas rates are capped at 8,000 miles (20,000 Pts) per year–or just 667 miles (1,667 Pts) per month, which has an estimated S$6.67 value-to-consumer. In addition, all spend outside of dining and overseas earns just 0.29 miles (1 Pt) per S$1. Cardholders can max out monthly rewards after just S$333 spend on dining or S$167 overseas.

Ultimately, SC Rewards+ Card can benefit consumers as a supplementary card for dining and overseas expenses, if their primary card offers only base rates on these spends. It’s worth mentioning, however, that SC Rewards+ Card loses substantial value when its 2 year fee waiver ends. Cardholders will need to pay the equivalent of S$16.05/month, which is greater than the potential value consumers can earn with the card.

In fact, this card is most competitive for consumers who spend S$7,000+/month, who can truly take advantage of its unlimited earning potential.

SC Rewards+ Card v. Maybank Horizon Visa Signature Card

Consider this if you want to maximise miles earned on dining and petrol
          • Pros
            • High spend on local dining & transport
            • Great for local spend and miles rewards on travel

              • Few travel perks & privileges

Maybank Horizon Visa Signature Card is an excellent, no-fee option for low spenders, offering 3.2 miles per S$1 spend on dining, petrol, and taxi fares and 2 miles on air tickets, travel packages and overseas spend–all after just S$300 minimum spend. The fee is waived 3 years, then with each S$18,000 annual spend (S$1,500/month). Consumers who spend as low as S$300/month will earn more with Maybank Horizon Visa Card than with SC Rewards+ Card, due to its high rates. Consumers who spend less, however, earn just 0.4 miles per S$1 on all spend, and can better maximise rewards for dining with SC Rewards+ Card.

SC Rewards+ Card v. HSBC Revolution Card

Consider this if you spend mostly on shopping, dining and entertainment

                  • Lacks rewards for frequent travellers who spend large amounts overseas
                  • Not suitable for low budgets

Social spenders seeking no-fee rewards for local dining, entertainment and online spend may be interested in HSBC Revolution Card, which provides unlimited 2 miles per S$1 spend on all of these categories and waives its fee with S$12,500 annual spend. Like SC Rewards+ Card, HSBC Revolution Card has no minimum spend requirement. However, it only offers 0.4 miles per S$1 overseas spend. Consumers seeking a supplementary card for dining who also spend time abroad might instead want to consider SC Rewards+ Card.
