UOB Preferred Platinum Card is a great option for modern spenders looking for a convenient way to earn miles from everyday purchases–especially those with limited budgets. Cardholders earn 4 miles (2 UNI$) per S$1 online and mobile contactless spend (Visa payWave transactions are not eligible) and 0.4 miles (1 UNI$) per S$1 general spend. As there are no vendor restrictions and an increasing number of merchants in Singapore accept payments via mobile digital wallets, cardholders can easily earn miles on nearly all of their spend. This flexibility–and the corresponding high rates–are impressive. However, there is a "catch." Rewards are capped at the equivalent of 4k miles/month (2k UNI$), which have an approximate S$40 value-to-consumer and can be maxed out with just S$1k spend. As a result, UOB Preferred Platinum Card is best for consumers with slightly lower budgets.

If you're a modern spender with a limited budget, you can rapidly earn miles on your everyday purchases with UOB Preferred Platinum Card. Cardholders earn an impressive 4 miles (2 UNI$) per S$1 spend online, as well as on mobile contactless transactions. These categories are quite comprehensive. In fact, consumers who frequently shop online and are comfortable using a mobile digital wallet can earn rewards for nearly all of their purchases. While UOB Preferred Platinum's rewards categories are quite flexible, there is one significant drawback. Monthly earnings are capped at just 4k miles (2k UNI$), which is approximately equal in value to S$40. This amount can be maxed out with as little as S$1k spend, which is quite limiting given the average consumer spends about S$2k/month. This includes everything from typical shopping to online food delivery and even Grab bookings, though online travel and mobile wallet pay are excluded. This clearly deviates from UOB Preferred Platinum Card, which offers a boosted rate for mobile contactless purchases. However, Citi Rewards Card also offers 4 miles per S$1 for all fashion retail; UOB Preferred Platinum Card does not reward offline purchases.


Beyond this, the two cards are quite similar. General spend earns the equivalent of 0.4 miles per S$1 and both have a total monthly earnings cap equal to 4k miles. Cardholders earn the equivalent of 4 miles per S$1 on all fashion spend–online, offline, locally and overseas–plus 4 miles per S$1 with a wide variety of online vendors. These vendors include Amazon, Lazada, Qoo10, Shopee and many more, making it fairly easy to earn higher rates on a variety of purchases.


Nonetheless, this online boost is far more restrictive than that offered by UOB Preferred Platinum. OCBC Titanium cardholders must manage their purchases based on merchant restrictions and are unlikely to earn higher rewards for online food delivery or transport bookings. Nonetheless, OCBC Titanium has one key positive differentiator from UOB Preferred Platinum–consumers who spend just S$10k/year (about S$833/month) are completely exempt from the S$192.6 annual fee. As such, individuals who are willing to track vendors as a trade-off to avoiding fees may prefer OCBC Titanium Card.

However, DBS Live Fresh's contactless rate applies to Visa payWave purchases, which are expressly excluded by UOB Preferred Platinum Card (which only rewards mobile pay transactions). Additionally, the value of 5% cashback is slightly higher than the average redemption value of 4 miles per S$1, which translates to about 4%.


Another key difference between these cards is their respective earnings caps. While UOB Preferred Platinum's cap is set at 4k miles overall (equal to about S$40 in redemption value), DBS Live Fresh Card has an earnings cap of S$60/month, which is substantially higher. However, this cap is also quite misleading–each of DBS Live Fresh Card's respective categories (online, Visa payWave and general spend) are individually capped at S$20/month.
