HL Assurance TravelProtect 360: What You Need to Know
HL Assurance offers a range of affordable travel insurance plans at each tier that balance cheap prices and travel inconvenience coverage. It comes in three options for single-trip and annual plans: Basic, Enhanced and Superior for single-trip policies and Enhanced, Superior and Premier for annual policies. You can purchase either a single trip or annual policy as an individual or family.
HL Assurance may appeal to those looking for policies that focus on trip inconvenience as it has above average trip cancellation and baggage loss or damage coverage. On the other hand, sports enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies should note that unlike many other travel insurance plans, HL Assurance does not cover any losses or damages incurred participating in a variety of adventurous activity, whether its parasailing or back-country skiing.
HL Assurance has the standard exclusions including pre-existing conditions, war, travelling against the advise of your doctor or the government, pregnancy related expenses and a plethora of sports and adventurous activity including parasailing, mountaineering and bungee jumping. Below you'll find an abridged version of HL Assurance's exclusions, but you should always read the policy document carefully to know exactly what you won't be covered for.
|Medical Exclusions||Trip Inconvenience Exclusions|
|Medical Expenses for pre-existing conditions||Engaging in sport for compensation|
|Pregnancy-related events||Items taken by customs officials|
|Suicide and mental illness||Baggage sent separately or items left unattended|
|Cosmetic or elective surgery (unless necessitated by injury)||Fragile articles, sports equipment|
|Travelling when you are medically unfit||Inability to travel due to business or contractual obligations|
|Metastatic or terminal illness||War, riots, rebellions|
|Bungee jumping, skydiving, back-country skiing, marathons, mountaineering|
HL Assurance Basic Plan
HL Assurance's Basic Plan, one of the more affordable travel insurance options available in Singapore for single-trip plans, stands out in two main ways. First, for both 1 week and 2 week trips globally, HL Assurance one of the cheapest plans on the market. Second, by focusing its coverage on the most likely causes of traveller's dismay, trip and baggage delays, HL Assurance's Basic Plan shows itself to be a utilitarian plan that may well save the day on your next family holiday. HL Assurance offers about three times as much coverage as Budget Direct Basic, Etiqa Basic and FWD Premium for flight and baggage delays (up to S$1,000 each) and offers about twice as much coverage for baggage loss per item (S$500) as the aforementioned insurers. Thus, if one of your main concerns when flying is baggage/trip delays and loss of baggage, HL Assurance is a high-value pick.
HL Assurance's Basic Plan does have a few shortcomings, however. It does not tend to offer as cheap prices for trips within the ASEAN region. We would instead recommend travellers to this region to look at the Allianz Global Assistance Bronze Plan for lower prices and significantly better coverage. HL Assurance's Basic Plan also offers below-average coverage for medical expenses; only Budget Direct and DirectAsia's basic plans offer less protection in this area. Finally, it offers S$2,500 less in coverage for trip cancellations than FWD Premium, which is in many ways quite a similar plan.
|Basic Plan||Basic Plan Average|
|1-Week ASEAN Value Ratio||0.76||0.62|
|1-Week Asia Value Ratio||0.84||0.67|
|1-Week Global Value Ratio||0.91||0.65|
|Total Medical & Personal Accident||S$360,000||S$416,923|
|Trip Inconvenience (Baggage delay, cancellations, postponement)||S$10,000||S$10,904|
HL Assurance Enhanced Plan
Aside from its affordability, HL Assurance's mid-tier plan, the Enhanced Plan, does not have too much to recommend when compared to other options that offer more value for your money. Within Asia, HL Assurance is the cheapest of the three plans for 1-week trips, but lags behind the other two for 2-week trips. HL Assurance's Enhanced Plan, like the Basic Plan, places more emphasis on travel inconvenience, with more coverage in this area than FWD and Etiqa. Comparatively speaking, FWD and Etiqa both provide more coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation and personal accident/death. So if you want greater protection against disruptions like baggage and trip delays and baggage loss, HL Assurance's Enhanced Plan is a better choice.
Etiqa Economy is cheaper than HL Assurance for trips to ASEAN countries and FWD Business is cheaper to trips outside Asia. If you're in the market for an annual plan, however, Allianz's GlobalAssistance Silver Plan outclasses the competition in terms of combining the cheapest prices on the market with significantly greater coverage for every aspect of trip inconvenience as well as medical expenses.
|Enhanced Plan||Mid-Tier Industry Average|
|1-Week ASEAN Value Ratio||0.85||0.88|
|1-Week Asia Value Ratio||0.95||0.89|
|1-Week Global Value Ratio||0.95||0.91|
|Total Medical/Personal Accident||S$515,000||S$874,688|
|Trip Inconvenience (Baggage delay, cancellations, postponement)||S$14,000||S$17,719|
HL Assurance Superior Plan
HL Assurance's Superior Plan offers below-average levels of coverage within the premium tier of travel insurance plans for relatively inexpensive prices. However, it tends to rank among the cheapest 3 plans among other top-tier plans for 2-week trips to ASEAN countries or other countries in Asia and ranks quite well as a mid-tier annual plan for trip inconvenience due to its above average coverage for trip cancellation and baggage loss. As HL Assurance's top-tier single trip option, we think you'll be better served by a different plan as it offers below average medical and trip inconvenience coverage. This is especially true if you are looking for a top-tier plan with the hopes of getting hard to find benefits and perks, as HL Assurance doesn't offer sports or adventure coverage, has paltry golf benefits and no terrorism coverage.
|Superior Plan||Top-Tier Industry Average|
|1-Week ASEAN Value Ratio||1.91||1.09|
|1-Week Asia Value Ratio||1.01||1.12|
|1-Week Global Value Ratio||1.12||1.17|
|Total Medical/Personal Accident||S$820,000||S$1,553,200|
|Trip Inconvenience (Baggage delay, cancellations, postponement)||S$21,000||S$25,804|
HL Assurance Premier Plan
If you want a well-balanced plan that is on the cheaper side for annual policies, HL Assurance's Premier plan could be a good fit. It costs around 15-20% below average for top-tier annual policies (and 10% below the annual industry average) while exhibiting above average coverage in both medical and trip inconvenience. Its most standout benefit is the S$8,000 baggage loss coverage, which is the highest you'll see for the price point. Additionally, its S$15,000 trip cancellation coverage and S$775,000 medical coverage stand above the industry average, features which add to HL Assurance's position as a bargain option.
However, though HL Assurance Premier's coverage beats the industry averages, its benefits fall short compared to annual plans in its tier. If you are looking to maximise coverage or want niche benefits like sports coverage, you will be better off with plans like Aviva or Allianz Global, though they are more expensive.
|Premier Plan||Top-Tier Industry Average|
|Annual ASEAN Value Ratio||1.13||1.09|
|Annual Global Value Ratio||1.24||1.17|
|Total Medical/Personal Accident||S$1,125,000||S$1,553,200|
|Trip Inconvenience (Baggage delay, cancellations, postponement)||S$25,000||S$25,804|
HL Assurance doesn't have the most comprehensive sports coverage. It only has a hole-in-one benefit for golfers and no coverage for your sports equipment. You are also not covered for rafting, canoeing, bungee jumping, jet skiing, ski racing, back-country/off-piste skiing, hang gliding, parasailing, bobsleighing, mountaineering or rock climbing. You are covered for scuba diving as long as you are either qualified or are scuba diving with an instructor.
You can submit claims with HL Assurance online or download and mail their pdf form within 30 days upon returning from your trip. You have to submit your original, signed claim form, copy of flight/itinerary, and copy of boarding pass/air tickets/passport. For claim-specific documents, HL Assurance's claims page has a breakdown of every document accepted depending on event.
