Standard Chartered Visa Infinite: Top Rewards Rates for Overseas Spend

  • Annual fee: S$588.5
  • 1.4 miles per S$1 local spend, 3 miles overseas (S$2,000 min spend)
  • 35,000 welcome miles (worth S$350)
  • Tax payments are eligible for rewards points
  • Free travel insurance, 6x lounge access, 1 free 4hr yacht hire
  • Hertz Asia Privileges, Golfing/Dining/Hotel Privileges
  • Foreign currency transaction fee: 3.5%
There is no better travel credit card on the market than Standard Chartered Visa Infinite Card if you want to rapidly earn miles for international spend–in fact, it offers the highest rewards rate on the market of 3 miles per S$1 spend overseas. The closest competitors offer just 2.4 miles, while most travel credit cards offer a much lower 2 miles per S$1. Cardholders also earn high rates locally, at 1.4 miles per S$1. If you’re a frequent traveller, your spend will go furthest with SC Visa Infinite Card.

SC Visa Infinite Card offers far more than rapid miles earning potential, however–it also stands out for its market-leading travel perks. Cardholders enjoy 6 free lounge visits and a 4-hour yacht-hire every year, plus free travel insurance, golfing privileges, and rental privileges with Hertz Asia. New cardmembers even receive 35,000 welcome miles, which offsets the S$588.5 fee (which is high, but clearly reflected in the value of its luxury perks and excellent rewards rates).

Finally, it cannot go unmentioned that SC Visa Infinite is extremely rare in rewarding cardholders for their banking activity. While most credit cards exclude financial transactions completely, SC Visa Infinite Cardholders can earn on everything from their income tax payments to mortgage loans, fixed deposits, investments and more. Those earning the S$150,000 required to qualify for the card can handily earn S$175+ in annual rewards simply by paying their taxes. Ultimately, SC Visa Infinite Card is by far the absolute best travel credit card on the market if you’re looking to maximise your earnings from spend overseas.

Learn More About Spending with Your Credit Card Overseas

Using your credit card to pay for purchases while overseas can make life a lot easier, especially if you're looking for a convenient, time-saving alternative to changing currencies at a money changer outlet. However, there are a few things to keep in mind if you opt to use your card. One of the most important is that whenever you charge a purchase overseas, you will be charged the item's price, plus an additional foreign currency transaction fee.

Foreign currency transaction fees apply both to purchases made in a currency other than the Singapore dollar (SGD) as well as purchases that are made in SGD, but are processed by a foreign bank. This means that whether you're paying for dinner in Euros in Europe or simply shopping online with a European brand, you could end up being charged a foreign transaction fee.

As for the charge itself, foreign transaction fees are divided between the card network (like Visa, MasterCard or American Express) and the card issuer (like OCBC, Maybank, DBS & more). Card networks typically charge a 1% fee, while issuers charge 1.5%–2.25%, adding up to a total of 2.5%– 3.25%. The fee charged is based on the price of the item and is added on to the item cost. For example, if you made an overseas purchase equal to S$100 and your card's foreign transaction fee was 3%, you would be charged S$103 for the purchase on your credit card statement.

Foreign transaction fees can be quite high, but can sometimes be recouped by credit card rewards. Cashback cards with overseas rates above 3.25% (like UOB One, Citi Cash Back & more) still offer nett rewards. Miles-earning cards, on the other hand, may not surpass such costs but typically offer great travel perks and other privileges that facilitate comfortable travel.

On a final note, you may have the option to pay in SGD instead of local currency while abroad, through a process called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). We typically wouldn't advise using DCC however as charged exchange rates are typically higher and purchases made in such a manner still incur an added foreign transaction fee.
