OCBC 90°N Card: Rapid & Straightforward Miles Accrual

OCBC 90°N Card
  • Up to 4mi/S$1 spend overseas + 10k annual bonus miles
  • Promotions: Up to 10% off Emirates economy & business class
  • Read Our Full Review
  • Annual fee: S$192.6, 1-year waiver, S$10,000 annual bonus miles
  • 1.2 miles per S$1 locally, 4 miles overseas & on select airlines
  • 4 miles per S$1 on select entertainment (Netflix, Spotify & more)
  • 8 miles per S$1 on select travel & accommodations bookings (Agoda, AirBnB & more)
  • No miles redemption fee, miles never expire
  • Foreign currency transaction fee: 3.25%
No other credit card on the market–even the priciest of travel cards–currently matches OCBC 90°N Card's overseas rewards rate. Cardholders earn an incredible 4 miles per S$1 spend in foreign currency, along with 4 miles for spend with select airlines (SIA, Air Asia & more) and entertainment merchants (Netflix, Spotify). Even further, booking with AirBnB or travel sites like Agoda earns 8 miles per S$1. Cumulatively, this means consumers can rapidly accrue miles across every point of their vacation journey, from planning and booking to spending abroad.

OCBC 90°N Card also stands out because of its affordability. There are no miles conversion fees, and the already reasonable S$192.6 annual fee is waived the 1st year, and then offset by 10,000 annual renewal miles (worth approx. S$100). It's important to mention, however, that there are no substantial travel perks and that the aforementioned rates are only valid until February 2020. After the promotion, cardholders will earn 1.2 miles per S$1 spend locally and 2.1 miles overseas–which is still quite competitive. Overall, OCBC 90°N Card's current rates make it perfect for people planning to travel this holiday season, though it can certainly continue to provide value to cardholders far beyond the promotional end date.

Learn More About Spending with Your Credit Card Overseas

Using your credit card to pay for purchases while overseas can make life a lot easier, especially if you're looking for a convenient, time-saving alternative to changing currencies at a money changer outlet. However, there are a few things to keep in mind if you opt to use your card. One of the most important is that whenever you charge a purchase overseas, you will be charged the item's price, plus an additional foreign currency transaction fee.

Foreign currency transaction fees apply both to purchases made in a currency other than the Singapore dollar (SGD) as well as purchases that are made in SGD, but are processed by a foreign bank. This means that whether you're paying for dinner in Euros in Europe or simply shopping online with a European brand, you could end up being charged a foreign transaction fee.

As for the charge itself, foreign transaction fees are divided between the card network (like Visa, MasterCard or American Express) and the card issuer (like OCBC, Maybank, DBS & more). Card networks typically charge a 1% fee, while issuers charge 1.5%–2.25%, adding up to a total of 2.5%– 3.25%. The fee charged is based on the price of the item and is added on to the item cost. For example, if you made an overseas purchase equal to S$100 and your card's foreign transaction fee was 3%, you would be charged S$103 for the purchase on your credit card statement.

Foreign transaction fees can be quite high, but can sometimes be recouped by credit card rewards. Cashback cards with overseas rates above 3.25% (like UOB One, Citi Cash Back & more) still offer nett rewards. Miles-earning cards, on the other hand, may not surpass such costs but typically offer great travel perks and other privileges that facilitate comfortable travel.

On a final note, you may have the option to pay in SGD instead of local currency while abroad, through a process called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). We typically wouldn't advise using DCC however as charged exchange rates are typically higher and purchases made in such a manner still incur an added foreign transaction fee.
