The rebate rates for purchases at non-participating merchants are relatively low at up to 0.5%. Rebates are also capped at $1,200 of eligible spending per month, making the Amex CapitaCard less effective for consumers looking for a more flexible option that offers unlimited rewards for a wider variety of merchants. Having said that, if you are an avid shopper at CapitaLand Malls, the American Express CapitaCard is a great option that offers the one of the best rebates at CapitaLand malls.

Learn More About Maximising Rewards with American Express

High spenders usually can meet minimum spend requirements with ease, but too often, they're limited by earnings caps. Affluent travellers, on the other hand, can often access luxury perks but must pay a lofty annual fee that cuts into rewards earned. Consumers who prioritise rapidly accruing rewards may want to consider the following tips when selecting their credit card.

  • Take Advantage of Unlimited Cashback Cards: Credit cards offering high rewards rates can seem particularly attractive. Unfortunately for higher spenders, these credit cards often have cashback caps. Consumers can only earn a set amount before rewards revert to a base rate, typically 0.3%. While the average consumer may not feel set back by such caps, higher spenders may find that their earnings are cut off prematurely, leaving a large portion of their budget unrewarded. In this case, such consumers may prefer an unlimited cashback credit card that lacks such restraining caps. In Singapore, unlimited cashback cards typically offer 1%–2% on local and overseas spend. Rates may be promotionally elevated for certain categories, and some credit cards offer special sign-up bonuses. In any case, our research and analysis found that such credit cards are best fit for consumers with budgets of S$7k–8k+/month. Only at this spend level would rewards earned eclipse potential earnings from capped alternatives.
  • Find the Right Balance Between Perks, Rates, & Fees: Many wealthy Singaporeans travel quite often and could benefit from an air miles credit card. Most options on the market, however, have extremely high annual fees and a broad spectrum of luxury perks. While some may prefer this type of rewards setup, consumers who care more about rapidly accruing miles may prefer a streamlined card with higher rewards rates. Such consumers can opt for a credit card with fewer perks and often pay a much lower annual fee, while still earning miles rates at par with premium cards. Additionally, less expensive travel credit cards often offer accelerated rates in specific categories–whether airline-specific or for certain types of spending–which makes it even easier to maximise miles with everyday spend.
