About SimplyGo & How We Selected the Best Credit Cards

With the gradual phasing out of EZ-Link cards, consumers can now turn to SimplyGo to pay for their train and bus rides. This capability, directly integrated into most credit and debit cards, allows for contactless payments without additional fees. Further streamlining the process, fares are charged to the consumer's credit card, showing up on their monthly statement. This eliminates the need for top-ups and consolidates expenses, making it easier for commuters to track their spend.

As transport is one of the largest spending categories for the average Singaporean, selecting a credit card that rewards payments made with SimplyGo can provide substantial value. While EZ-link and TransitLink transactions have historically been excluded from earning rewards, many credit cards offer miles or cashback on SimplyGo spend. Consumers seeking maximum rewards for transit spend should consider cards that offer high rates for transport or contactless spend. We've identified the best options currently on the market, providing detailed reviews on their benefits and drawbacks overall.

Learn More About Using Credit Cards for Contactless Payments

  • There are now many ways to pay for goods and services without ever manually swiping your credit card. These include using a digital wallet (Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Apple Pay & more) to make mobile payments, using "tap and pay" at a contactless checkout terminal, or tapping a 3rd party card that's linked to a credit card or bank account. You can tell if your credit card has tap and pay capabilities by checking for a universal wave-like symbol on its face–a series of 4 curves of increasing size expanding outwards to the right.

  • Each of these methods require a slightly different approach. Digital wallets, which link to credit or debit cards, are stored within a mobile app. Simply open the app and then hold your phone near a contactless payment terminal to complete your purchase. For tap-and-go payments, simply tap your credit card on the contactless symbol (described above), which is often clearly displayed on compatible checkout terminals. Finally, 3rd party cards–such as the previously popular EZ-link card–can also be used for contactless spend. Nonetheless, such functionalities (including those required to make transit fares) have been increasingly integrated directly into credit cards. One example is the gradual replacement of separate EZ-link cards with SimplyGo capabilities included within credit cards.
  • Using a phone to make mobile payments or simply tapping your credit card on a checkout terminal may feel a bit unsettling. There have been some concerns over fraud and identity theft, primarily because RFID technology (which makes tap-and-pay possible) can be vulnerable to card readers looking to steal personal information. Additionally, the streamlined payment process makes it very easy for criminals to continue using a card that's been lost or stolen. Digital wallets are accessible to just about anyone who knows the mobile app's password or security code. These risks are definitely worth considering before making contactless payments.

  • Nonetheless, the convenience of making contactless payments often outweighs the risks above. The simplified transactional process saves time with every purchase, which can be especially useful if you're busy or running late. Contactless payments also allow consumers to streamline their wallets, especially when all types of payments can be made with a simple tap. This is true of SimplyGo, which now allows consumers to tap their credit cards to pay for transit rides rather than relying on an additional EZ-link card and worrying about top-ups. Because of the ease and time-saving convenience, contactless purchases are becoming increasingly popular and relevant in modern society.
